A large number of legends surround the lore of the Christmas tree.
It seems that the use of a Christmas tree indoors appears to have
originated in Germany. People in Germany would bring trees into
their homes to decorate. On the eve of Christmas, the inhabitants
would decorate a “Paradise Tree” an evergreen, which
is a symbol of eternal life. The tree was used in a famous play
relating to Adam and Eve. In the beginning of the 17th century
AD, Germans started to decorate their houses with evergreens for
Christmas celebrations. Eventually, the tradition was carried
over to America where it was well received as a great Christmas
tradition.
The tradition of the Christmas tree began to spread in other parts
of Europe. In England its use was popularize by the English Royalty
by decorating the first Christmas tree at Windsor Castle in 1841.
The first English Christmas Tree was decorated by Prince Albert,
husband of Queen Victoria by candles, candies, fruits and gingerbread. Now Christmas tree is common and adored throughout the world. In
US it is on public display. It has become a tradition for the President
of the United States to light the National Christmas Tree in Washington
every year. Earlier Christmas trees were often decorated with colored popcorn,
apples, candles, nuts and cookies. But with the invention of electricity
in the early 20th century the use of electrical Christmas lights
has increased.
